myHRcareers myHRparty: Behind the Scenes!
Thank you to everyone who made it to the myhrcareers networking party last night! We had an amazing time networking, catching up with old friends, and enjoying the food, drink, and HR talk. Speaking on Innovation and HR, we had Veran Performance Director Tom Holmes and Executive Coach Michelle Brailsford inspire, push our thinking, and set the tone for this year’s events.
Here’s a quick recap of last night.
Behind the Scenes
There’s a lot of preparatory work that goes into these parties before kicking off. In the weeks leading to the event, we delve deep into our HR network for some of the top HR thought leaders to share a bit of their experience, knowledge, and wisdom. At the previous event, we had Sian Griffiths, HRD of Bare Escentuals, and Tim Pointer, founder of Starboard thinking, discuss the importance of engagement and culture in organisations as well as share their advice for aspiring HR professionals. Check out the video here.
After coordinating with our selected speakers on what they’d like to share, we form a theme for the next event and begin to spread the word!
On the day of the myHRparty (yesterday!), myHRcareers leader Charlotte Hallaways, along with a few other organisers and the guest speakers, arrive late afternoon at Harris+Hoole in Central London, before the shop closes down to the public for the evening. After the last few H+H stragglers leave, we set up all the tech gear, food platters, and drinks stand and make sure everything’s ready to go for when the doors open at 6:30 p.m.!
Ready, Steady, Go!
At 6:30 p.m., we have two myHRcareers helpers posted at the door to check people in; this time it was lovely Gloria and Sophia (why not connect with them on LinkedIn?). Then the party begins! In this preliminary round of networking we have our attendees enjoy drinks and a few nibbles while getting to know the rest of the crowd. After two years hosting these events, we’re used to a pretty big turnout, and this time was no different! We had over 100 HR professionals and enthusiasts join in, and those who couldn’t make it in person contributed to the debates online; it was fantastic!
Our HR & Innovation Speakers
Tom Holmes, Director of Veran Performance. “If you can understand it, then it’s not innovation.
Tom began our HR talks with what innovation in HR will look like in the next two years. “Real innovation is about solving problems, not having ideas.” The great thing about this is that most HR departments have plenty of problems to solve!
So where will we see the greatest innovations this year?
- Recruitment: building talent pools is in, using third parties is soon to be out
- Networked Communities: HR will be built around communities, not silos
- Employee focused HR technology: mobile technology will eradicate training as we know it

Michelle Brailsford, Executive Coach & eternal myHRcareers inspiration.
Michelle’s talk discussed the lack of innovation in HR in larger companies and why they are less accepting of innovative ideas than some of the newer, smaller companies–especially start-ups! Innovation is key to a company’s survival and HR must play a crucial role in driving it; but how? Just as in our personal lives, many HR functions have these “big hairy goals” that can be hard to maintain, where it’s easy to get discouraged and deflated when things get derailed. Michelle’s solution? Micro-actions! Micro-actions are small, achievable goals made on a daily basis that contribute to the overall plan. By taking charge of these we can drive not only our own careers, but the success and evolution of our HR functions!

After about 30-45 minute of advice and ideas by our HR thought leaders, the networking was back on! Networking is so critical in today’s professional world and you never know who you’ll meet and what kind of fortunate circumstance you’ll find yourself in. We hope you were able to make some meaningful connections last night to help you reach your personal or professional goals.
If you weren’t able to make it to the myHRparty last night, we’d love to see you at the next one! We always appreciate active engagement from our members as well, so please get in touch to see how you can get more involved. At the end of the day, the ultimate goal of this community is to help you; so take charge and make that first step!
