Ralph Tribe is Director for People, UK & Ireland for Sky, the largest entertainment company in Europe and one of the largest converged media companies in the world. Voted Britain’s “Most Admired Company” and one of the five best recognised brands in the UK, Sky remains one of this country’s greatest entrepreneurial success stories and continues to grow subscribers, revenues and profits come what may. Famous for being a market ‘disruptor’, Sky relies upon relentless innovation and execution to survive, and people are central to this dynamic.
Ralph started his career in sales with Reed Publishing and then moved into HR Management with Trainload Freight Ltd and then Railtrack plc. Having survived the privatisation of the railway industry Ralph joined Qtab as a fee earning consultant for a period and from there joined the technology consultancy DACG as European Head of HR. DACG took on the mighty ‘Big-4’ to become European market leader within their niche, primarily by developing one of the most compelling Employer Brands in a market where recruiting and retaining the best was the only way to get to the top, and stay there.
From 1999 to 2006 Ralph worked for Getty Images where he was engaged in the race, primarily between Getty and (Bill) Gates (via his company Corbis Inc) to revolutionise the ‘visual content’ market space for Creative, Publishing and Editorial customers around the world. Once again, this was a market where skills were scarce and where recruiting and retaining the best people in a global media and technology market was the differentiating factor. Ultimately Getty Images won this particular race and by 2005 had become the most profitable listed media company in the world.
After Getty Images, Ralph spent a brief period with BT plc before joining Sky with a view to playing a part in another great story…
Ralph has a degree in Sociology from Nottingham and a Diploma in Human Resource Management from Kingston University. At Getty Images his team were winners of the Personnel Today Award for Global HR Excellence. Well known for his thoughtful, but often controversial opinions, Ralph is an exciting and regular speaker at various national and international HR conferences and a contributing author to the Institute of Personnel and Development’s “Future of…” scenario planning publications. His areas of expertise include; Executive Development, Global Working, Mergers & Acquisitions, Highest Performing Teams, Organisation Culture Development, Efficiency (“Essentialism”) in Business and Entrepreneurial Value Creation. He lives with his ego-moderating wife and three children in Kingston, Surrey.
